Can you make excellent French toast without milk? Absolutely! Soft, toasted bread, maple syrup, and fresh fruit–a great combination.  

As tasty as traditional French toast, this dairy-free version is delicious.   

Here's a simple French toast recipe without milk using basic ingredients.  

It's ideal if you're out of milk or making a special breakfast for friends with special diets.   

Water: This recipe only needs water to replace milk.

In this recipe, I like light oat milk, but you can also use almond or coconut milk. Soy milk resembles whole milk.

This eggy French toast recipe needs it. They give the meal structure and richness. I like organic eggs.  


We recommend slightly stale or dry bread. Thus, the bread absorbs the egg mixture without becoming mushy. This recipe goes well with thick, white bread like Challah or Brioche. Also love sourdough bread. You can also use grocery store whole wheat bread.   


Use a liquid to moisten the bread instead of dairy. Use melted coconut oil, vegan butter, or any neutral-tasting oil.  

Neutral-tasting oil: 

Adds a warm, sweet flavor to the French toast. 

Vanilla extract: 

Increases dish taste. Ground cinnamon works best.  


Sweetens and caramelizes French toast. You can also use honey, maple syrup, or granulated sugar.  

Brown sugar: 

For frying the French to, use vegetable, canola, or coconut oil at high heat. To get a crispy crust, heat the oil before adding the French toast.
